Today at our Lead meeting, the Leads and I are talked about this article. It's is based on studies where children were offered a treat and told they could eat the treat now, but if you can wait for the researcher to return, they would get two treats. The children who waited for the second marshmallow were more likely to have better SAT scores and better jobs later on in life. My favorite quote from the article is as follows
"Because if you think about it, if the child doesn't believe that second marshmallow is actually going to arrive, then it makes sense to eat the first one." My biggest take away from this piece is our students need to trust their environment and Providers to be successful. This is something we have always known, but it is so wonderful to get a science-based reminder sometimes. We spoke about how each child learns and responds differently. Ms. Clem also pointed out how interesting it is being proactive with children's needs and desires. We spoke about how providing things for our children before they express the need for them will help our students feel safe and loved while at EASY Care. I'm excited to see how the EASY Care staff applies this knowledge and helps to foster a warm and nurturing environment for our students. Feel free to check out the article and discuss your thoughts with the EASY Care staff: www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2017/07/03/534743719/want-to-teach-your-kids-self-control-ask-a-cameroonian-farmer Warmly, Tori
